The Geeks’ Guide to World Domination | Review

I found this book in comic book store in Chapel Hill while killing some time one afternoon.  It is a humor book by Garth Sundem.  The Tagline is:

be afraid, beautiful people

There are exactly 314.15 entries in this geek manifesto that is a homeage to all things geek from “The quotable Yoda” to “Things that will make your brain hurt” this book had me interested all the way through.

The writing style is sarcastic and dripping with satire.  If you are interested in joining the geek army for the global-takeover than this book is for you.

East of Eden | Book Review

I just finished the classic “East of Eden” by John Steinbeck.  It is part of my “read-the-classics-so-I-don’t-look-like-an-idiot-when-people-talk-about-books-campaign.”  This 600 pager is a change of pace for me, but I’ve got to say I really liked it.

It is a well-told story about two families in the Salinas Valley in Northern California that centers around the dynamic of brothers. Thus the “East of Eden” reference to the land East of Eden where God banished Cain for killing his brother Abel.

There were some very vivid and evil characters in this book. Especially, Cathy. I found myself hoping for her misfortune (don’t worry I don’t think she was a real person so it is okay).

This book is about just how much a human can take and move forward.

A lot of the book just had me saying “That’s messed up.”  But, that’s just the way life works since we are all living somewhere “East of Eden.”

A Million Miles in a Thousand Years | Donald Miller

Donald Miller’s new book “A Million Miles in a Thousand Years” is filled with some really moving stories.  The tagline is “What I learned editing my life” and centers around the story of turning his another one of his books “Blue Like Jazz” (READ MY REVIEW) into a movie.

Unfortunately that project has been put on hold (read the update on donmilleris.com).

This book is challenging and asks you tough questions like “What kind of story am I telling?”  There was one chapter in the book that particularly stood out to me about a father and daughter dynamic where the daughter was growing up and distancing herself from her family with a questionable boyfriend and the father could have grounded her and threw away the key until she turned 30 but instead realized that the story their family was telling was boring and that’s why she was looking someplace else for a more “action-packed” story.

What that father and family did was truly remarkable and inspiring… (read the book).
