If you are a fan of gadgets then you probably can’t wait to get your hands on the latest “ianything” from the magical world of apple. But what about unlocking your current iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to more apps and functionality? This is called jailbreaking.
1. It is not illegal. However you will void any warranties your device is under if you have to send it in without restoring the device. The Mac Rumors forum reports some users restoring the device after jailbreaking and having the device repaired without voiding the warranty.
2. It is easy. Thanks to the people of jailbreakme.com all you need to do is visit the site on your device and slide the arrow from left to right. In the past you needed to be a serious nerd to attempt a hack like this, but all you are doing is using this site to remove the restrictions placed on your device by the manufacturer.
4. Using the MyWi 4.0 app. For $19.99 you can buy the app that turns your iPhone or iPad into a wifi hotspot. Without the app tethering costs $20 per month with a $25 data plan from AT&T.
5. It is reversable. You can connect your device to your computer, sync, and restore in iTunes.
Some people think of jailbreaking as something bad on the equivelant of sneaking a camera into the movies or ripping tags of a mattress, but thanks to recent rulings by the DCMA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) companies like Apple can no longer cry foul to people who want to use apps and functionality not made by their developers.
